Processing Details

At the Nyabirongo washing station, coffee cherries are meticulously sorted and floated to remove under-ripes before undergoing a natural drying process. The cherries dry on raised beds for 3-4 weeks, during which they are carefully turned and monitored by seasonal workers. This process transforms the cherries into 'kiboko,' a local term for dried coffee cherries. The beans are then hulled, graded, and bagged, ensuring a high-quality final product.

The natural processing method and diverse growing conditions contribute to the vibrant and fruity flavor profile of the Bukunzo coffee. Each season, the coffee reflects the unique characteristics of the region, offering a delightful and ever-changing coffee experience.

Explore the distinct taste of Uganda - Bukunzo coffee and enjoy the exceptional quality and flavor crafted by dedicated smallholder farmers and skilled processors. Perfect for those who appreciate a bright and fruity coffee with a rich, sweet finish.

Kituei Smallholder Farmers and Agri Evolve

Uganda - Bukunzo coffee is a remarkable product of the Kituei smallholder farmers, supported and processed by Agri Evolve. This exceptional coffee originates from the Kituei community, a small trading center located in the foothills of the Rwenzori Mountains, just outside the Kasese district. This region is renowned for its fertile soils and ideal coffee-growing conditions.

Community and Farming Practices

The Kituei community comprises over 500 dedicated smallholder farmers who cultivate coffee on small parcels of land ranging from 1 to 4 acres. These farmers meticulously tend to their coffee plants, ensuring the highest quality cherries. The region's altitude, ranging from 1700 to 1840 meters above sea level, provides the perfect environment for growing the SL14 and SL28 coffee varieties.

Processing Excellence at Nyabirongo Washing Station

Once harvested, the cherries are delivered to the Nyabirongo washing station, operated by Agri Evolve. Here, the cherries undergo a meticulous natural processing method that enhances the coffee's unique flavor profile. The process begins with careful sorting and floating to remove under-ripe cherries. The selected cherries are then dried on raised beds for 3-4 weeks, during which they are regularly turned and monitored by seasonal workers. This slow drying process, under the sun, transforms the cherries into 'kiboko,' a local term for dried coffee cherries.

Quality and Sustainability

Agri Evolve is deeply committed to supporting the Kituei community and ensuring sustainable farming practices. They play a crucial role in enhancing the quality of life for the farmers by providing essential resources and support. For instance, they helped establish a clean water supply for the community in 2020, demonstrating their dedication to the well-being of the farmers and their families.

Unique Flavor Profiles

The natural processing method, combined with the diverse growing conditions of the Kituei region, results in coffee with a vibrant and fruity flavor profile. Each season, the coffee reflects the unique characteristics of the region, offering a delightful and ever-changing coffee experience. The careful attention to detail and commitment to quality by the Kituei smallholder farmers and Agri Evolve ensure that Uganda - Bukunzo coffee is a true representation of the region's potential.
